With so many foods available for us to eat on a daily basis you would think that everyone would be making healthy food choices: sadly, this not the case. Many of the food choices available are not healthy for us.
Eating plant foods (fruit, vegetables, nuts, seed, legumes and whole grains) is a healthy way to eat. Not only is eating plant food good for your health it is also good for our environment.
Here are 5 reasons why you should be eating plant foods.
Plant foods are real foods from nature and are an optimal source of nutrients for our bodies. When you eat a range of plant foods on a daily basis, they will supply your body with all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants you need to be healthy.
When you eat real food rather than manufactured and processed food, your body recognizes plant food as food so is able to process it effectively. Natural, unadulterated plant foods will feed, nourish and heal your body. Unlike processed foods, plant foods can prevent the chronic diseases that modern society has started to accept as a normal part of life.
Eating a modern diet of processed food (high salt, high sugar, bad fats, chemicals, preservatives and additives) will harm your health and make you fat. A diet high in processed food is addictive, so you continue to eat more of the foods that are lacking nutrients, harming your health, and causing obesity.
You can’t get fat eating vegetables, only full. Plant foods are packed with fibre that helps move food through your digestive system. Additionally, eating high fibre foods will help you to feel full so you are not going to want to eat more food than your body requires.
Vegetables are low in calories, so even if you eat a large volume of them, it is very difficult to gain weight. The key is to eat the plants foods raw or lightly cooked or steamed rather than frying, coating in batter or covered in cheesy sauces.
Processed food is manufactured and denatured to the point our body doesn’t recognize it as food: rather than nourishing the body, processed foods cause toxicity and inflammation and ultimately disease. Eating a diet high in processed food diet is linked with causing obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardio-vascular disease, and degenerative brain diseases.
The health of your gut biome is linked to disease prevention so by eating plant foods you will reduce toxicity and inflammation in your body and support your body’s immune system to fight infection and disease.
When you choose to eat organic plant foods, less chemicals and pesticides are put into the environment making it safer for you to eat now and keeping the planet safe for future generations.
Animal food production is a significant contributor to green house gases (emissions from transport, packaging and processing all contribute to global warming); deforestation to clear ground for animal food crops; and require more water per kilogram of animal food products than plant food products in their production.
When you eat food from animal sources, be aware that the animals are often raised in factory style environments that are not natural for them, and are forced to eat foods that they would not normally eat to hasten their growth. These manufactured feeds are in turn ingested by humans and this can impact on your own health.
Apart from being cruel to animals, factory style animal production can damage natural environments and use huge amounts of natural resources to produce manufactured feeds.
In every meal we have choice as to what we eat. When you choose to eat plant foods you are making a healthy choice for your own body as well as the environment.
Until next time, wishing you a delicious day filled with love, laughter, happiness AND plenty of plant food!
